Abstract:This article discusses first some of the approaches that have focused on the issues of user trust and e-commerce. Then, it argues for a differentiated approach to building trust in online retailing by arguing that many e-commerce transactions are based on mutual self-interest instead of on moral trust. It is concluded that the specifics of the retail context have an important role in the choice of trust building approaches.
