Abstract: | It is examined whether small organizations adaptation responses to uncertainty in the regulatory and competitive sectors of their environment follow a hierarchical cost pattern by examining the relative importance various categories of adaptation responses have in firms, using data from physicians in solo practice. First an adaptation model suited for small organizations is proposed and then the relationships among regulatory uncertainty, competitive uncertainty, and the adaptation pattern are examined. Data support the supposition that adaptation in small firms is a multicomponent construct. Similarities reinforce refining the model. |
