Abstract:Employee self-management and empowerment are quickly becoming the contemporary battle cry of American industry. Almost always, self-management and empowerment work through formally designated teams. A promising alternative is presented in a detailed case study of a company that operates almost totally on the basis of work teams, even though teams are never officially established. They develop naturally, as needs arise, in an environment where there are no managers or bosses, but lots of leaders. The company in question is W. L. Gore and Associates, and the lessons of the Gore experience can provide guidance for other organizations considering employee empowerment and self-management.
