Abstract:The traditional hot milk drink market entered a period of decline in the 1960s and 1970s but the overall market was revitalised from the early 1980s onwards by the development of convenient instant varieties of the traditional brands, with the first instant hot chocolate beverage launched in 1981 by Rowntree's Carnation, followed by the first instant malted drink in 1982 from SmithKline Beecham with Instant Horlicks. Instant food beverages include dried skimmed milk, so that hot water is the only addition required.
