Abstract:After a decade of disarray, Brazil's economy is being modernized by a group of intellectuals picked by Fernando Henrique Cardoso, the former finance minister who, because of their efforts, could become the next president. His team has devised a stabilization programme of such sophistication that Argentina's much-praised convertibility plan seems simple in comparison. For the firs time in over a decade, Brazil's monthly inflation rate has been reduced to single figures without a price freeze. In June inflation peaked at 50% a month.
