Abstract:A recent paper repeating the jibe that personnel specialists are "big hat, no cattle" touched a raw nerve. But how do we know Human Resource managers make a useful contribution? David Guest and Kim Hoque review the main research and conclude that personnel should be more confident about its contribution. It is often considered, rightly or wrongly, that personnel represents the soft side of life at work and, as such, does not need to be taken as seriously as some other activities.
