Abstract: | To help understand the changes facing R&D management, this paper presents the results of a study examining the ideas and experiences of R&D directors from technology-based companies. The study investigates major changes that R&D management has undergone in recent years , the changes they expect to encounter during the nex years, and causes of the changes. The skills and knowledge necessary for effective R&D management are identified. The greatest effect on R&D performance include such capabilities as understanding customer needs, monitoring market developments, building cross-functional teams, commercializing new technologies, managing multiple R&D projects, and accelerating new product development. |
