Abstract:Successful academics are commonly expected to publish in refereed journals. In the UK concerns about the relative quality of different journals have been brought out by different benchmarking activities such as the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The article analyses data from the RAE 2001 concerning marketing professors and the authors use four ranking schemes in order to assess the quality of RAE journals. The results indicate that there are still difficulties in the publishing of all UK academics in the top North American marketing journals. Different reasons for these difficulties are examined and future publication strategies are proposed. The aim of the article is to reconsider the apparent requirement to publish in the top US journals. Some suggestions for achieving this are presented but also the validity of this goal is discussed.
