| Abstract: | Two of the most important questions concerning the patent system and its effects are to what extent the rate of development and introduction of inventions would decline in the absence of patent protection and to what extent firms make use of the patent system, and what differences exist among firms and industries and overtime in the propensity to be patented. The results of an empirical investigation based on data obtained from a random sample of 100 American manufacturing firms and the new findings bearing on each of these questions are reported. |
