Abstract:The content of a product line is discussed as one of the key determinants of profitability and sales. It must be constantly manipulated. Literature approaches to the identification of weak products are summarized. Screening,index and portfolio methods are described in detail. A field study is described looking for policies and practices used by companies in selecting weak products. The methodology of the study is outlined. No formal systems resembling the normative approaches were found. However two broad patterns of weak product identification were revealed. Nine performance criterion were uncovered and three were founded fundamental.
