Abstract:If the transition to self-managed work teams is to be successful, managers need to trained for their new roles as facilitators. In a study several methods of information gathering were used: firsthand observation, interviews, interaction with the management team during the transition, discussions. Some interesting transition patterns were identified and analyzed. Four primary themes emerged from this analysis: 1. initial suspicion, uncertainty and resistance; 2. gradual realization of the positive possibilities inherent in the new work system; 3. wrestling with a new role as a facilitator; 4. learning a new language making conversations with teams easy. A case study is offered.
