Abstract:Based on previous research, buyer-supplier and supplier-supplier alliances have been seen as important mechanisms to foster learning and exchange efficiencies. However, there is controversy as to how these alliances interact from reinforcing one another to a negative interplay. Using survey data from the Brazilian auto parts industry, this paper empirically tests these competing views. The positive or negative interaction btw. vertical and horizontal alliances is proposed to depend on the level of technological uncertainty (here as: tech-uncty.) of goods exchanged. Vertical ties (as: vrt-ties) seem to inhibit horizontal ties (as: horz-ties) when tech-uncty. is low. When tech-uncty. is higher, vrt-ties and horz-ties do not seem to have any meaningful form of interaction.
