Abstract:This article deals with architect firms as hybrid organizations (here as: h-orgs.) and architecture as a hybrid profession (as: h-prof/s). H-orgs. and h-prof/s. are characterized by conflicting goals, which may bring tensions. There are ways of dealing with this tension. Some architects are quite pragmatic, adjusting to market conditions, whereas others are more uncompromising. The autonomy and distance from the service part of the profession seem as a paradox since architects depend on, and need to adjust to, the power, favour, wealth and money of their clients. On the other hand, this may explain why architects seek to eliminate the influence of clients, politicians, the general public and others on the design of buildings (original in Norwegian).
