Abstract:The success of a product is linked directly to the person who manages it. An in-depth study of 128 managers of French mass consumption products was conducted. After outlining and analyzing the results, they are compared to those obtained in studies of American product managers. Particular attention is given to the characteristics of the product managers themselves, to their profiles and to their earlier career. It was sought to understand their ideas about the perspectives of evolution of their career; and, attention was made to rearrange and analyze their opinion on the competencies needed to succeed in this position. A number of question is raised about the future of this profession.
