Abstract:IBM's Research heritage dates back to 1945, starting as a laboratory on the campus of Columbia University in New York City. Since then, its investments have been aimed at delivering innovations that help IBM's customers lead in their respective industries. The route to market for innovation has evolved continuously, often leading changes in the information technology industry. During the 1970s, the research-to- development bond was strengthened; then, during the 1980s, strong connections to customers and customer applications were forged. Today, the confluence of technical innovation and business innovation requires a technology research laboratory to also be well grounded in business and well-connected to business innovations.
