Abstract:The area of strategic planning and its corollary, IT planning, have subsequently risen to prominence in the realm of business academics and more specifically in information systems research because of the pressing need for organisations in various business sectors to "outdo" the competition. IT planning literature is permeated with a functional paradigm wherein planning is the sole responsibility of thinkers and doers are limited to implementation issues. This is deemed unsuitable in the knowledge intensive environment that most organizations are facing. Moreover planning models are based on western management theories and do not reflect accurately the reality of non-western management contexts. Based on the above two shortcomings, the authors the ground for an alternative approach to IT planning.
