Abstract:This paper explores the significance of information and communications technologies (ICT) in the technological diversification trend within the biggest manufacturing firms in 80's and 90's. The authors aim to pin point differences among technologies when companies from different industries patent outside their traditional technological capabilities, and analyze whether the tendency to patent ICT is distinctive when compared with other technologies. The findings show that technological diversification has taken place in ICTs and the non-ICT specialist industries are increasingly developing the cluster of ICT-related technologies, which implicates widespread development of corporate capabilities in the key technologies of the emerging ICT paradigm.
