Abstract:The introductory article deals with the subject of the whole set of articles in the issue of Organization Science, Sep/Oct, Vol. 9:5. It is stated that improvisation is an art form that needs to become the hallmark of all levels of management, beginning at the top. It is stated that the extant theoretical and empirical research on the theory of adaptation in theories of organization evolution, mutation or renewal is underdeveloped. The main focus of the issue is on the individual attribute improvisation as it relates to human capital flexibility at the individual or group level. Improvisation is, however, also an organizational attribute.
