Abstract:The article deals with the Protestant ethic and comic spirit of capitalism. The main issues of the study are - the Max Weber thesis, the evidence from humor, religion in the jokes, secularisation and the calculating Cardis, the comic cultural contradictions of modern capitalism, secularisation of humor and comedy of Calvinists and Catholics. The paper provides a brief summary of Weber's works. It discusses the nature and chronology of the humorous material from capitalists societies that pokes fun at the Protestant ethic and indicate why it should lead us to think differently about Weber's thesis.
