Abstract:The influence of the Moscow patriarchate, the governing body of the Russian Orthodox Church, is frequently overlooked in Western analyses of contemporary Russian politics. The Orthodox Church is a powerful symbol of Russian statehood, tradition and culture. Orthodoxy is frequently invoked in discussions of Russia's post-Soviet revival and regeneration in the political as well as the social and cultural arenas. This article examines the cooperation between the Moscow Patriarchate and the Russian state in the post-Soviet decade. The extent to which the Church leadership promotes symphonia is a key concern of the article: The doctrine is incompatible with civil society and religious pluralism.
