Abstract:In this article, two hypotheses about economically-relevant values of Christian believers are developed. Protestants should work more and more effectively or display a stronger 'social ethic'. Using current survey data, tests confirm substantial partial correlations and possible different 'effects' in mutual social control, institutional performance and homogeneity of values. Yet, there is no difference in work ethics. Thus, Protestantism seems conducive to capitalist economic development, by promoting an alternative 'social ethic' facilitating impersonal trade.
