Abstract:In 1984 Pakistan introduced Islam banking. It was an attempt to increase President Zia's popularity. However, Pakistan did not follow the radical methods of Iran: interests were not cut off but phased out. Nevertheless, it took a whole year to transform the banking system, including the softwares of the computerized banks. But the real problem is that the balance-sheets of the nationalized banks are groaning under the burden of non-performing loans.
