Abstract:Mainline organization theory generally presumes that organizations tend toward ever greater "fit" or isomorphism with their environments. Much of current organization theory also stresses the rational-legal bases of organization at the expense of charismatic and traditional authority. It is shown that religious organizations in the third world provide a most likely setting for the discovery of non-bureaucratic organizations and non-isomorphic responses to the environment. Two non-isomorphic responses to the environment - rejection and substitution - were found in a study of 200 Brazilian communities. Bureaucratic, patron-client and kinship churches were identified and their non-isomorphic responses to the environments were separately analyzed.
