Abstract:Even at the height of success, managers need to be able to detect early signals of trouble and implement strategies to head them off. An obvious warning sign is a deteriorating cash flow. Strategic inconsistency is another one. In troubled industries, there are some companies that perform well in spite of all the problems around them. Consistency is a key factor in the success of these companies. Another warning sign is turnover of senior management and attrition of middle management. Often, the company fires its chief executive officer or its chief financial officer. If a company reaches deep trouble, the time has come for drastic action. Ten "rules" are laid down to rescue the firm.
