Abstract:It is argued that, even for companies that have the potential for successful exporting and even when the government does not interfere with their internationalization efforts, most U.S. companies do not adequately pursue their foreign market opportunities. It is explored which barriers to exporting are management imposed and what can be done by managers to improve this situation. Basically the reasons fall into one of five major categories of managerial barriers: limited ambition; unrecognized opportunities; lack of necessary resources; unrealistic fears; and managerial inertia. It is very important for the American economy to reduce these managerial barriers.
