Abstract:The Japanese banks' fall from grace and top positions was ascribed to post-bubble traumas and to a weakening of the yen, when THE BANKER published its annual rankings of the world's TOP 1 ,000 banks in July. But that is not the end of the story: in the next few years there will be a continued contraction of banks' assets at home and overseas. This asset downsizing will need to be accompanied by a parallel process of upgrading as Japanese banks seek to shed archaic methods of credit assessment.
