Abstract: | Globally, retail banks have led a sheltered existence. The future for these enterprises holds a multitude of new changes and challenges. Only a few forward-thinking institutions are slated to be winners in the challenging decade ahead. Change will be radical, because in its present form, in most countries, retail banking is inefficient -- a legacy of protective regulation. Deregulation, however, coupled with fast-moving technological innovation, is unleashing pressure for the industry to evolve away from a collection of relatively similar organisations. |
