Abstract:For most Scandinavian banks the deep recession of the early 1990s and the accompanying losses have been largely overcome. But while improving profitability and stability is welcome, banks still face the challenges of stiff competition from the region and elsewhere, and limited lending markets. Overcapacity remains a concern throughout the region, in some cases due to overbranching rather than overbanking. But the process of consolidation continues with the merger in 1995 of Finland's Kansallis-Osake-Pankki and Union Bank of Finland into the Merita Group being the largest in the region.
