Abstract:Taiwanese banks are being forced to review their strategies, going for profits before growth. Taiwan's economic woes and the rising popularity of low-interest direct financing options are adding to competitive pressures on new and old banks and forcing executives to focus more on profit than growth. Still affected by the fallout of several months of mainland Chinese political and military pressure in the run-up to the island's first presidential election in March, Taiwan's economy has also suffered from soft domestic investment and slow world trade expansion.
