Abstract: | In sharp contrast to the ballyhoo surrounding the Chinese takeover of Hong Kong, Macau will be reunited with the Chinese mainland with minimal fuss. The Portuguese territory may have benefited at the expense of its larger colonial neighbour across the Pearl River delta. Hongkong's size and importance to the mainland economy meant that it survived even Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution virtually unscathed, only to face a difficult transition to Chinese rule in July, after political bickering between London and Beijing. |
