Abstract:The state-owned banks have fared badly under the four-year liberalisation and their red balance sheets contrasts with the success of the new private banks. The general complacency that the four-year-old banking reform in India is well on course was abruptly shaken when India's state-owned banks turned in balance sheets splashed with red for the fiscal year 1995-96. Eight out of 27 government-owned banks reported net losses of Rs25.92 billion ($728 million) , up from Rs6.25 billion in the previous year.
