Abstract:Unlike its richer neighbours in the Gulf Bahrain's hydrocarbon resources are relatively small and it has had to look elsewhere to build its economy. In the late 1970s Bahrain sought to establish itself as an international financial centre and this strategy proved extremely rewarding in the ear of OPEC surpluses and petrodollar recycling. But over the past 10 years lower oil prices, changing domestic banking systems and Gulf conflicts have taken the shine off the halcyon days of the early 1980s.
