Abstract:An austere monetary corset has helped stabile the Argentine economy. Robert Taylor reports on the prospects for banks, which survived thanks to a cautious approach but face increasing pressure to consolidate. The Argentine economy has taken a turn for the better over the past year. So can a resurgence in banking activity be far behind? In fact, the disappointing progress in bank earnings and lending from the depressed levels reached during the recent recession masks slowly gathering momentum pointing to a more dramatic upturn in late 1997 and early 1998.
