Abstract:Progress is being made in bringing the laws of the former communist countries of central Europe in line with the UK and other western nations. But there is still some way to go before the statutes relating to security against loans by banks and other creditors match up to the protection offered elsewhere. In two of the three countries covered in this article new rules are on the way. From 1 May, changes in Hungarian law become effective, while in Poland similar moves come into effect at the beginning of next year.
