| Abstract: | Last year's merger of Bank of Tokyo and Mitsubishi Bank created a giant which by assets is comfortably the world's biggest banking group. A combination of a relatively low capital base and the continued decline of the Japanese yen, however, denied the new titan top ;lace in THE BANKER's annual listing of the world's Top 1000 banks. That, for the second year running, is taken by the UK's HSBC Holdings. The changes at the top of the list highlight some of the important factors which influence the bank ratings. |
