Abstract: | Financial and banking crises in the emerging markets of east Asia and Russia have put the banks of post-communist central Europe under fresh scrutiny. These countries are now the best part of a decade down the road in their transition to market-based systems -- rather more than a decade in the case of Hungary. But many close observers reckon that even in fast-track countries local banks cannot yet be said to be providing an adequate standard of banking service, as well as demonstrating real financial robustness and competitive prowess. |
