The criteria used in the ranking are as follows: Strength - tire one capital; size - assets; soundness - capital assets ratio; profits - pre-tax profit; performance - profits on av. capital, real profits growth, return on assets and cost/inc. ratio; BIS capital ratio; NAL to total loans. The top five banks are: Citigroup; Bank of America Corp.; Chase Manhattan Corp; Bank One Corp; First Union Corp. |
