Abstract:As rumours of major cross-border mergers among European banks continue to proliferate, the author looks crystal ball and speculates on five possible get-togethers. BSCH and Royal Bank of Scotland already have links. Deutsche Bank and Axa would fill a gap for the insurance giant and provide a partner for the German group. Lloyd TSB and Commerzbank could be easier than other possible European combinations. BBVA has been frustrated in its Italian forays, and ABN Amro is too big for its home market. BNP Paribas could lift its limited international exposure with Standard Chartered. In the end, a good relationship between the people at the top is often more important than economic logic.
