Abstract: | In recent years, the TV talent show Idols (hereafter as: I.) has been one of the most successful entertainment programmes internationally. This study analyses the content of 2 seasons of the Dutch version of I., with particular focus on the ritual structure. It is shown that the ritual meaning of I. lies in the representation of harmony and ranking. By criticizing and disgracing 'bad' contestants as a ritual of abjection, while glorifying the battle of the finalists, an imaginary community is created with a fixed social order and a definable morality. Thus, I. can serve as a platform for the articulation, representation and discussion of contemporary values. |
