Abstract:This paper focuses on two mechanisms explaining educational inequality: cultural reproduction and relative risk aversion. The theory of cultural reproduction describes cultural differences between social classes as a primary reason for class variations in schooling. According to relative risk aversion theory, the avoidance of downward mobility is a key factor affecting educational inequality. As a data set, the study uses survey data taken from secondary school pupils in Amsterdam. The main result is that cultural capital is the primary reason affecting educational inequality. However, relative risk aversion affects schooling ambitions.
