| Abstract: | British Rail will operate direct high-speed freight train services between Britain and the Continent when the Channel Tunnel opens in 1994. The production of a train plan for these services can be formulated as a multi-objective combinatorial optimization problem. This paper describes the problem and gives details of the heuristic algorithm used for its solution. The overall problem consists of three subproblems: (1) through-tunnel train planning; (2) through-tunnel train timetabling; (3) pre/post- marshalling train planning and timetabling. |
