| Abstract: | Issues relating to the privatization of the German national railways, the Deutsche Bundesbahn and the Deutsche Reichsbahn are investigated. The challenge is huge: 70 Mrd DEM debt, 15 Mrd deficit in every year and a turnover of 25 Mrd DEM characterize the financial state of the two companies. The man whose task is the to make the German railways rentable is Heinz Duerr, the president of the companies. The reform of the railways needs substantive changes in the legislation relating to the legal status of the railways.
