Abstract:Privatisation has been a major feature of the British economy in the period since 1979. Initially, there was widespread skepticism that denationalisation of industries such as telecommunications or gas was either practical or beneficial. By 1993, however, around two-thirds of the national industry sector had been transferred to private ownership and this rolling back of the frontiers of the state has been judged sufficiently successful as to justify extension to the rail network. This article looks at the Government's approach to rail privatisation and asks whether it will succeed in promoting greater efficiency, increased investment and improved services to customers.
