Abstract:This article investigates the antecedent role of miscalibration of knowledge in strategy planning. It is argued that miscalibrated managers who overestimate external factors and indicate a high level of confidence in their estimates are likely to execute strategies that are relatively more evolutionary and incremental, while miscalibrated managers who overestimate internal factors and indicate a high level of confidence in their estimates are likely to execute strategies that are relatively more discontinuous and disruptive. Perspectives from social cognitive theory support the underlying processes.
