Abstract: | The deregulation of the USA airline industry in 1978 initially generated innovative gains; however, in the long run, the industry featured a trend towards market concentration, deterioration of service performance and of labour relations. Compared to the USA airline market, the competitive position of European airlines is determined by short-haul traffic and higher traffic density, by public ownership, by a stronger substitution threat by rail and road traffic etc. Still the recent American experience may be used from a European perspective in order to avoid managerial mistakes. The different potentialities from which competitive advantage for the European airline industry may arise are outlined in the article. |
