Abstract:The paper examines five accounts by high-profile managers. A discourse analysis method is described and an analysis of managers' accounts of their own development is presented. The conclusion points out the similarities and the differences in their accounts. The following results have been obtained: 1). Different upbringings might lead to equal degree of success. 2). All the top managers see themselves as strongly affected by their childhood, and as having been shaped by it for the style of management they later practiced. The themes and categories that emerged from the analysis include coping with confusion, sense of history and continuity, balance, bigotry, being extra cautions, family closeness, diplomacy and others.
