Abstract:The opinion that, taken the fundamental data into consideration, the German Mark would have to be devaluated against the other currencies of the European Monetary System, first of all against the French currency, has been expressed several times in the last few months. The high rate of the inflation and the huge deficit of the balance of payments and of the budget are the facts on which this notion is based. Despite the expectations, the opposite has happened: The German currency has turned out to be strong, while other currencies within the Community have got under pressure after the crisis of the European Monetary System in September, 1992. The article tries to explain this contradiction.
