Abstract: | Contrary to the conventional wisdom, it's not fluctuations in the stock market that have put the American economy in jeopardy. It's the fact that American firms persist in pursuing short-term profits and high stock prices. Stockholders, who have the power to control corporate managers, could help set things right. They could - and should - insist on pursuing long-term economic growth, rather than seeking shorter-term profits in the stock market that have no direct connection to the corporation's success. |
