Abstract:Two studies were conducted to examine how chronic loneliness influenced local news and soap opera viewing. It was assumed that chronic loneliness relates to increased electronic media use and passive television use. Findings show that lonely viewers are less likely than nonlonely ones to watch soap operas to seek excitement. They use TV to fill idle time. A passive orientation to TV accompanies loneliness.
