Abstract:After much political turbulence and with new appendages in the form of "side agreements" on the environmental, labour , and emergency action issues, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) came into effect on January 1, 1994, among the Contrasting Parties (i.e. Canada, Mexico and the United States) - representing the world's largest trade block ( 360 million in population and over $6 trillion in Gross Domestic Product). On the one hand, NAFTA (as an international treaty fostering regional economic intergration) is far less ambitious than the 1958 Treaty of Rome establishing the European Economic Community (now, post-Maastricht, the European Union).
